THE METHOD

The Pilates Method is a comprehensive and systematic method of exercise that challenges both the body and mind.

It’s holistic nature allows the body to achieve greater overall strength and balance. The classical technique encompasses hundreds of exercises that can be done on the different apparatus as well as on the mat.

The six principles of Pilates, concentration, control, coordination, breath, precision and flow, demand that the person practicing Pilates be committed to the method with both the body and mind throughout each session.

My method is largely based on the classical Pilates method. The belief is that the body will start to balance itself, gaining greater strength, stability, stamina and stretch as it progresses through the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The body will let you know when it is ready to advance. While I am a big believer in listening to your body, I know for the majority of my clients and myself that sometimes the body needs help finding its way. I have the experience of being trained as and performing as a dancer.

I also have gleaned a vast amount of knowledge from working with some of the best body workers in the world. I have rehabilitated many personal injuries and have learned so much from each and every one. I have also studied various disciplines, including contemporary Pilates, Gyrotonics, gyrokenisis, Myofascial release, pelvic floor health and anatomy.

  • All of my above experiences and training have informed my method of teaching. Ultimately, I use all of the knowledge I have to look at a person’s body and see what needs to be balanced and made stronger. From the minute someone walks into the studio, I am already scanning their body and identifying their movement patterns. These inform where I start the session with that person and what we need to do to achieve the goals. Goals often come in the form of becoming pain-free, having greater mobility, feeling more stable, improving strength and increasing stretch.

These goals become the North Star for the client, and I customize each session to work toward achieving them.

I also encourage my clients to pay better attention to their bodies in their everyday life outside of the studio. Whether that includes home exercises, ergonomic adjustments to their living and working environments, or more awareness of movement patterns, I look to inform my clients so they can make better decisions. The ideal outcome is that this body awareness ultimately helps prevent injuries and chronic conditions.

My clients often say that I “am so much more than just a Pilates teacher.”
